24 Based on the author’s synopsis, this was a good historical romance story, with some intrigue. The main characters are attempting to solve a puzzling death. The heroine was head strong and independent. The hero was caring attentive, supportive and tries his best to muddle through. The author did a great job in showing how Ryan and Marlena were both new to the socializing and courting world. Neither were fans of balls, nor experienced in interacting with the opposite sex. They radiated how nervous, awkward and shy they were around each other. The epilogues where beneficial to the story.I had mixed emotions in giving this book three stars, but these are the following reasons: A few times I had to back pedal and reread a few pages because I was confused. For example, when Ryan and Marlena meet with Randall the second time, Ryan introduces Marlena to Randall as he is unaware who this woman is and is shocked once he learns her name. But, several chapters earlier, Ryan and Marlena meet with Randall the first time and Marlena speaks her mind and runs off in anger. Another time Gerard introduces himself to Ryan and states he saw him at a woman’s neighborhood sitting in a carriage. Actually, Ryan was waiting inside a church, as Marlena’s maid had to retrieve him from there when they were ready to exit the neighborhood. And I had a few unanswered questions. Why the secret about James’ female friend? Did the mother ever learn the truth? My other questions would spoil it for others if I posted them here. I still liked the book. I received an ARC, but am voluntarily offering my opinion.
